DETAILED COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The "expanded SOAP notes" provides a method of directed study and a review of the common diseases, disorders, and primary health care problems in the areas of Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Emergency Medicine. There is an emphasis on General/Family Medicine. The course is designed to offer individuals a summary of the fundamental cognitive knowledge which provides the foundation of the necessary data base for the practice of general primary care medicine. The course is organized around a systems approach to medicine and will address the disease entities and conditions in the following ten areas:
  1. Dermatology
  2. Ophthalmology/Otorhinolaryngology
  3. Pulmonary System
  4. Cardiology/Peripheral Vascular System
  5. Hematology/Lymphatic System
  6. Gastroenterology
  7. Endocrine/Metabolism
  8. Musculoskeletal System
  9. Neurology/Psychiatry
  10. Urinary/Reproductive System
GOAL
The goal of this course is to provide a broad overview of medicine covering more than 100 of the most common presenting problems and specific disease entities to strengthen the participant's medical data base, clinical problem solving skills, and test taking skills.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course the participant will be able to identify, recall, list, and discuss the most pertinent information for each of the most common diseases or disorders effecting each organ system including:
  1. the etiological agent or agents;
  2. a brief summary of the pathophysiology;
  3. the epidemiology;
  4. the incidence or frequency of occurrence;
  5. the presenting chief complaint;
  6. common presenting signs and symptoms;
  7. additional relevant subjective findings;
  8. pertinent parts of the physical examination;
  9. expected physical examination findings;
  10. appropriate laboratory tests;
  11. expected laboratory results;
  12. significant negative data;
  13. diagnostic hallmarks;
  14. differential diagnostic considerations;
  15. initial therapeutic management plans;
  16. first line and alternative drug therapy;
  17. follow-up evaluation plans;
  18. time frame for follow-up evaluations;
  19. possible complications or sequelae;
  20. prognosis with and without treatment.
